How to Pack Your Kitchen | Dishes, Glassware, Small Appliances, and More

Your kitchen is one of the most delicate rooms in your home to pack. It contains glassware, silverware, food, appliances, and other fragile items that require special attention. However, proper packing of these items guarantees safety, irrespective of the distance you intend to cover. All you need to avoid possible mistakes is ample time and proper packing material. The materials you should purchase include boxes, newspapers, packing tape, bubble wrap, trash bags, and pre-sectioned boxes.

Glassware is perhaps one of the most delicate of all kitchen items. As a result, you need to handle it with the care it deserves. To do so, use pre-sectioned boxes to prevent breakage. In the absence of pre-sectioned boxes, cover the items with bubble wrap and packing paper before putting them in a cushion-padded box. The padding is important because it secures the items in position when moving.

Wrap each item from the corner of the paper and move diagonally, ensuring that you cover all overlapping edges. Once you have wrapped all the items properly, place the first layer of the wrapped items in the cushion-padded box and add other layers, taking care to separate each row and column with padded cushioning for maximum protection.

Flatware and Silverware

Flatware and silverware are prone to rusting and tarnishing. To prevent this, you need to wrap each item with plastic wrap. For added protection, follow with newspaper and then seal the items using tape before placing them in a cushion-padded box.

A great way to pack your kitchen appliances is to use their original packaging. Use medium-sized boxes in case you don’t have the original materials anymore. Clean and dry each appliance first and identify all removable parts. Be sure to follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for correct removal. Wrap the parts with bubble wrap and newspaper. Place your appliance in the packing box and set the wrapped parts on top before sealing the box with tape.

Pots and Pans

Start by finding the right size box for your pots and pans. Starting with the biggest pot or pan, place them in the box one after the other, arranging them in stacks. Wrap any glass lids in packing paper and place them on top of the pots or pans before sealing the box.

Use pre-sectioned boxes for maximum safety. Wrap a layer of packing paper to cover each cup and follow with newspaper for added security. Set the wrapped cups into the box, taking care to place the cups upside down. The handles of the cups or mugs should face the same direction.

Before packing your food items, check their expiration dates, and discard those that have expired. Place boxed and canned foods in small boxes and perishables in coolers if you’re moving locally.

In a nutshell, proper packing ensures that your kitchen reaches its destination intact. Be sure to gather enough packing material in advance to avoid last-minute rushing, which may cause poor packing. It is recommended to first pack items that are not used frequently and then finish with the rest.
